DescriptionThis subject is designed for students for whom English is an Additional Language or Dialect. Students develop and use a range of language strategies to convey ideas and opinions that are appropriate for a variety of purposes and contexts. They exchange opinions and convey information and experiences in written and spoken forms. Student learning is supported through explicit modelling and construction of texts. Students who complete 20 credits of this subject with a C grade or better will meet the literacy requirement of the SACE.
TopicsStudents undertake a minimum of four assessment tasks:
o Assessment Type 1 – Responding to Texts (Oral and Written)
o Assessment Type 2 – Interactive Study (Interview or Discussion)
o Assessment Type 3 – Language Study (Oral, Written or Multimodal)

Suggested Prior LearningThis course is significantly more rigorous than Essential English (Literacy) and is recommended for students who have achieved at least a B in EAL at Year 10.

Additional InformationThe eligibility requirements for students to enrol in this course include either
a) A cumulative total of five or fewer years of full time schooling where the medium of instruction was English.
b) A cumulative total of five or more years of schooling where the medium of instruction was English, where written language proficiency has been identified and assessed at or below the described level to be eligible for EAL.
