DescriptionThis subject involves students in the process of creating a major Arts production for the school. (eg: the School Musical) or to plan and perform in several smaller performances within the school community.
The course focuses on technique, choreography, performance, and critical analysis, and students explore a range of local, national and global dance traditions, influences, and perspectives. Students develop a creative, technical and physical understanding and appreciation for dance as an art form and its relevance to our culture and society.
Students who choose this subject learn different dance styles and techniques, develop choreographic skills through analysis of existing works and experiment with their own creativity. They learn and develop a working knowledge of planning, teaching, choreographing and staging a dance performance as both a performer and as a behind the scenes team member for the school musical production and other smaller performance opportunities.

AssessmentAssessment is school-based. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

o Practical Exploration 40%
The practical components of the course allow students to demonstrate their skills in research, knowledge acquisition and practical application and reflection. Students demonstrate skills and knowledge through at least 3 of the following assessment tasks:
1. Prepare and perform an audition
2. Peer teaching of a dance lesson to middle school students
3. Plan a flash mob for a school event
4. Participate in learning, rehearsing and performing dances for the school musical or other school events.

Students keep a folio of all ideas, plans, research and draft assessment pieces as well as regular journal entries that demonstrate their own ideas opinions and development in relation to their learning skills throughout the duration of the course and their participation in all aspects of the stage/dance production.
They use this folio of evidence in a filmed ‘Round Table Discussion’ with their teacher and peers focusing on their learning and development in the Dance course

o Connections 40%
Students work collaboratively in small groups to either:
1. Plan, design and create costumes or sets or lighting scape for the musical or dance performance,
2. They can design tickets, programs or posters for the production (or any other negotiated area related to the production.)
3. Choreograph 1 or more dances for a school event or for the school musical
A written report with self and peer assessment is also part of this assessment task.

o Personal Venture 20%

Students individually select an area of the Dance Course that is of interest to them. They explore and analyse relevant information, concepts, ideas and/or skills, and communicate their ideas and opinions about them.
Student select one capability and explore the link between the capability and the area of interest they have chosen.

Additional InformationThis is a 20 credit subject taken in Semesters 1 and 2. Due to its integration with the school musical and other school community events, students must commit for the full year. Students wishing to do this subject as a 10 credit must negotiate with the teacher, and will have to complete the written component of this course offline.
Special Requirement: Students must attend after school lessons, holiday workshops/rehearsals and full cast rehearsals and performances.

Approval required if a C grade is not achieved in Year 10 Dance or Drama.
