Description
This subject is a semester, 10 credit course. Students who gain a C grade or better in this subject can count credits towards the literacy requirement of the SACE.

Stage 1 English has an emphasis on responding to texts, creating texts, and intertextual study. Students critically and creatively engage with a variety of types of texts including film, media, poetry, and prose texts. To be successful in this course, students must have a strong grasp of the structure and language demands of different genres and text types. Students are expected to use this understanding when creating their own texts for different purposes, audiences and contexts in written, oral and/or multimodal forms.

This is a demanding course and requires proficient written communication skills and an ability to analyse complex texts.

Stage 1 English prepares students for Stage 2 English.
TopicsStudents provide evidence of their learning through four assessments.

There are 3 assessment types.

Assessment Type 1: Responding to Texts.
Assessment Type 2: Creating Texts.
Assessment Type 3: Intertextual Study. An investigation of language features in more than one text (for example, magazines, newspapers, poetry, novels, reality television, graphic texts, blogs, or websites) or a study of two texts with common ideas, perspectives and/or voices that provide different points of view.
AssessmentAll work is assessed according to the SACE Performance Standards resulting in a level of achievement A to E. Assessment is school based but subject to external moderation.
