DescriptionStage 2 English as an Additional Language is a 20 credit subject. Students who gain a C grade or better in this subject can count the credits towards the literacy requirement of the SACE.

In Stage 2 English as an Additional Language, students increase their confidence and competence as users of English, developing skills as critical readers, viewers, listeners, speakers and writers.

They learn to use language that is appropriate for cultural and situational contexts, controlling the structures and features of English. Students also develop an understanding of a variety of texts.

Students develop their understanding and proficiency in the use of the English language as they build on the skills they have in their first language. This process helps them to develop skills in reflecting and commenting on the ways in which cultural meanings are expressed in texts.
TopicsAcademic Literacy Study- Students develop their academic literacy skills through creating written and oral academic texts and extending their communication skills and strategies.

Responding to Texts- Students focus on developing comprehension skills, language and text analysis strategies.

Examination- Students complete a 2 ½ hour external e-examination that is divided into two sections:
Section 1 - Comprehending Multimodal Texts.
Section 2 - Written
AssessmentStudents must complete the following assignments :

School’s Assessment (70%):
1. Assessment Type 1 : Academic Literacy Study (30% )
2. Assessment Type 2: Responses to Texts (40%)

Through completing this study, students develop a personal and critical understanding of a range of issues and texts.
3. Assessment Type 3: E-Examination (30%)

Additional InformationThe eligibility requirements for students to enrol in this course include either
a) A cumulative total of five or fewer years of full time schooling where the medium of instruction was English.
b) A cumulative total of five or more years of schooling where the medium of instruction was English, where written language proficiency has been identified and assessed at or below the described level to be eligible for EAL.
