Description | This subject is a full year, 20 credit course. Students who gain a C grade or better in this subject can count credits towards the literacy requirement of the SACE.
In this subject, students respond to and create texts in and for a range of personal, social, cultural, community and/or workplace contexts. Students understand and interpret information, ideas and perspectives in texts and consider ways in which language choices are used to create meaning.

Topics | Students provide evidence of their learning through seven assessments, including the external assessment component. Students respond to film, poetry, persuasive websites, and short stories. Students create a descriptive piece, and an advocacy text. See a description of the external assessment below. |
Assessment | The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 2 Essential English:
School Assessment (70%) • Assessment Type 1: Responding to Texts (30%) • Assessment Type 2: Creating Texts (40%)
External Assessment (30%) • Assessment Type 3: Language Study (30%). For this assessment type, students complete an independent language study. The focus of the language study is an understanding of the use of spoken, non-verbal, visual, and/or written language by people in a chosen context beyond the classroom.

Suggested Prior Learning | Satisfactory completion of Stage 1 Essential English or Stage 1 English is strongly recommended. Students who completed Stage 1 Essential English Literacy with a B or A achievement and adherence to due dates can enrol into Stage 2 Essential English upon discussion with Senior School, current subject teacher, and coordinator. |
