DescriptionThe ACE program is designed to support Aboriginal students to be successful on their pathway to becoming ‘work ready’, providing opportunities to learn directly from employers about work and identify skills that are valued in the workplace. Through participation in industry/employer immersion, work readiness training, and VET skills clusters; students will participate in culturally responsive experiences which provide a stronger understanding of pathways through vocational training and towards employment and/or further education.

TopicsWorkshops

•Total of 6 half day career development workshops
• 2 x half day workshops each term, delivered by Workabout Centre staff

Workshop content will include:

• an Aboriginal perspective across work readiness and employability activities, e.g.
o resumes – do you include you are Aboriginal? Why/why not
o interviews – body language, perception from employers
o rights and responsibilities in the workplace – What is racism, discrimination? How do you handle this? What are your rights, where to go? how do we balance work/school/family commitments?
o essential identification
o career exploration

Workshop delivery:

• Term 1 – first workshop delivered by week 5, second workshop by week 8
• Term 2 – both workshops delivered by week 8
• Term 3 – first workshop delivered by week 4, second workshop delivered in weeks 6-9

3 block weeks

• Term 1 – Week 11
o Career exploration activities with hands on experiences

• Term 2 – Week 5 OR Week 6
o Weeks 9 and 10 – optional ‘regional roadshow’. We will bring a day of activities out to you with local providers and university

• Term 3 – Week 5
o Industry immersion week and graduation
AssessmentAll students MUST complete a folio

Completed folio includes:

• Career match
• Industry targeted resume and cover letter
• Responding to job advertisement and questions
• Career Action Plan
• Career Expo
• Industry immersion activities

Only ATSI students are eligible to apply for this course.
Enrolment in the program is subject to a panel process.
Students who elect to be a part of the SAASTA program must enrol in a minimum of 2 SAASTA lines to satisfy the requirements of the program.
