SACE StageSACE Stage 1
SACE Credits10 credits
Subject Length1 semester
DescriptionThe three bands of science (inquiry skills, science as a human endeavour, and science understanding) are integrated throughout student learning in this subject.

In the study of Chemistry, students develop and extend their understanding of the physical world, the interaction of human activities and the environment, and the use that human beings make of the planet’s resources. They explore examples, that may involve the application of new technology, of how scientific understanding is dynamic and develops with new evidence.

Students integrate and apply a range of understanding, inquiry and scientific thinking skills that encourage and inspire them to contribute their own solutions to current and future challenges.

TopicsStudents study topics relating to:

• Acid and Bases
• Organic chemistry
• Energy in reactions

A minimum of 8-10 hours of class time will involve practical activities.

AssessmentAssessment is school based. Students demonstrate their learning through two assessment types:
• Skills and Applications Tasks (2 tests - 50%)
• Investigations Folio (50%) The Folio includes one practical investigation and one investigation with a focus on science as a human endeavour (SHE task).

These are assessed against SACE performance standards: Investigation, Analysis and Evaluation (IAE) and, Knowledge and Application (KA).
