Subject Details - 9 Science

Subject Length2 semesters
DescriptionStudents develop their knowledge and understanding of Science through a curriculum that encompasses Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth and Space.

Students reflect regularly on their learning through Quick Writes and Learning Logs.
TopicsIn Biological Sciences students explain how body systems provide a coordinated response to stimuli. They describe how the processes of sexual and asexual reproduction enable survival of the species.

In Earth and Space Sciences students explain how interactions within and between Earth’s spheres affect the carbon cycle.

In Physical Sciences students analyse energy conservation in simple systems and apply wave and particle models to describe energy transfer.

In Chemical Sciences students explain observable chemical processes in terms of changes in atomic structure, atomic rearrangement, and mass.

Students explain the role of publication and peer review in the development of scientific knowledge and explain the relationship between science, technologies, and engineering. They analyse the different ways in which science and society are interconnected.
AssessmentStudents are assessed against the Australian Curriculum achievement standards using the strands:

o Science Understanding
o Science Inquiry
o Science as a Human Endeavour
Additional InformationExcursions may be offered and incur a cost.
